History of Fichardt Park and the Brandkop Farm

History of Fichardt Park and the Brandkop Farm

Fichardt came from Germany to Bloemfontein in 1853.

Aspects of the history of certain individuals of the Fichardt-family had been investigated and documented by several historians and interested people. Fichardt came from Germany to Bloemfontein in 1853 to quickly established the biggest trade enterprise during the Republican period in the city. Although of German descent, the home language of the family was English. As an exemplary citizen of the Orange Free State, who unconditionally accepted it as his second fatherland, Fichardt has traced deep steps in the community of Bloemfontein by, among others, to serve as mayor and chairman of
the board of De National Bank of the Orange Free State. His mild donation helped to establish a city library named after him and to pay the Lutheran church’s debt.

Gustav Adolph Fichardt (1834-1900) bought the farm Brandkop in 1859. An inscription on a wall gable of the main residence, records that the original house was erected in 1876 and was renovated and extended in 1919. More extensions and alterations followed through the years. The farmyard contains the main house, several cottages, a
kraal and milking shed and other remains of previous farming activities in the form of corrugated iron buildings, concrete
foundations, several water reservoir dams and irrigation furrows, stone steps and terrace walls.

Lanes of Trees
Several lanes of Blue Gum trees mark out the entrance to the farmhouse at Brandkop from the south-east over a distance of almost 3km. The trees are very old and it is recalled by the Fichardt descendants how, Gustav Adolph Fichardt, the first owner of the farm, used to walk out during his lunch hour to plant the seeds of the trees.

Graves
A graveyard near the farmhouse contains the burials of members of the Fichardt-family, the original owners of the farm, who were all former prominent citizens of Bloemfontein. The grave of Gustav Adolph Fichardt (1834-1900) and that of his wife Caroline Fichardt (Born Beck) (1843-1903), forms the nucleus of the graveyard at Brandkop.

Fichardt Park’s crime-free successes

Fichardt Park’s crime-free successes

This is how we ensure our dedication to our 100% crime-free plan in Fichardt Park.

Fichardt Park was established in 1970. With the establishment of the Fichardt Park Neighbourhood Association in 2010, safety was set as a first priority. The Fichardt Park crime-free plan was initiated in late 2014.

The plan aimed to address the unacceptable high levels of crime. The values in this plan share honesty, etiquette, loyalty and respect. The ultimate vision is to live in a 100% crime-free Fichardt Park.

Over time, we created a well-established and effective security structure headed by our own security managers. The FNA has a 24-hour control room in the neighbourhood. The FNA has signed five service-level agreements with security companies: Fidelity-ADT, Senforce, Securiforce, ITR-SA and Bloemsec.

This system is most unique and the biggest of its kind in South Africa. The South African Police Service, Park Road, has been part of the plan since its introduction in 2014, with the late Brig Ramakhotso signing the operational plan.

Resident involvement is built through participation in the Community Policing Forum. The CPF has become a part of our safety plan, with members performing patrols.

Good communication is essential between all role players, especially during emergencies. We have incorporated an effective and reliable radio network (FICH-Net) to achieve this goal. The FICH-Net radio network has helped us to extend our radio network to the broader community, including schools, hospitals, shopping centres, etc.

We encourage our residents to become involved in this plan; in doing so, every member can assist with the prevention/reduction of crime. There is good co-operation between parties.

Crime information is communicated to the team daily. Patrols and visibility are planned accordingly. This method is tried and tested in crime prevention actions.

So behaal FICH-Net radionetwerk sukses op sukses!
