Vriendelike groete

Fires Are Dangerous – Stay Safe!

Fires Are Dangerous – Stay Safe!

Fires Are Dangerous – Stay Safe!

A house fire is one of the scariest things you can go through. In the moment, panic sets in and it’s hard to think clearly. That’s why knowing what to do before a fire happens is so important.

The FNA is here to help during a fire emergency. They’ll arrange the right support — but remember: your life always comes first.

🧯 Fire Extinguishers:

A fire extinguisher can save lives, but only if it’s ready and you know how to use it.

  1. Do you have one at home?
  2. Do you service it regularly?
  3. Do you know how it works?

🔥 Gas Safety

Gas itself has no smell, but manufacturers add one so you can detect leaks.

  1. Check gas appliances often.
  2. Turn off gas bottles and appliances before bed or when leaving home.
  3. Never use matches or lighters if you smell gas — it can cause an explosion.

⚡ Electrical Safety

Electricity is one of the biggest fire risks in homes.

  1. Make sure you have an Electrical Compliance Certificate (COC) from a qualified electrician.
  2. Switch off appliances when leaving home.
  3. Don’t overload multi-plugs with high-power items (e.g. washing machines, tumble dryers, air fryers, irons). Plug them into the wall directly.
  4. Check power cords often. Don’t use appliances with damaged wires.
  5. Be careful with electric blankets:
Never use them with hot water bottles.
Switch them off once the bed is warm.

🚨 What To Do During a Fire

If a fire breaks out:

  1. Stay as calm as possible.
  2. Evacuate immediately. Take your emergency bag if you can.
  3. Call the FNA or use your handheld radio.
  4. Warn your neighbours.
  5. Never go back inside.
  6. Contact your insurance company to report the fire.

📝 What To Expect After Calling for Help

If a fire breaks out:

  1. The FNA (or you) will need to call the municipal fire department.
  2. If a private fire company arrives:
    – They will give you a form to sign.
    – Read the terms carefully before signing.
    – Once signed, you’ll be responsible for paying the amount on the bill.
👉 Key Reminder: Fires spread quickly. Protect yourself first, then call for help. Your safety always comes before property.

Plante in Fichardt Park parke

Plante in Fichardt Park parke

Whatsapp Hacking

Whatsapp Hacking

Are you the next victim of Whatsapp hackers?

During the FNA’s crime surveys, we noticed that cybercrime is increasing by leaps and bounds. In the past few months, some of our members have also been affected by cybercrime. This causes great inconvenience to the owner of the phone, as well as to any contacts of that person.

We urge members to be vigilant. First of all, you must secure your WhatsApp application, as indicated below:

All users: WhatsApp > Settings > Privacy > Advanced > activate the top two options. For further information, click on the first option at “Learn more”. There is quite informative information that can prevent a lot of trauma.

Here are some guidelines to help you identify suspicious:

  1. Typos and language errors in the message.
  2. Messages that expect you to tap on a link, or activate a new feature through a link, or to download an app.
  3. Requests to share your personal information, such as your credit card or bank account number, date of birth or passwords.
  4. Requests to forward a message (this one is popular, they ask you to send a code. This is usually a contact you know) – do not forward this code and contact your contact person immediately.
  5. Requests for money or that you have to pay to use WhatsApp.
  6. The scammer pretends to be someone you know.
  7. The message could be about lottery, gambling, jobs, investments or loans, etc.
  8. The person starts talking to you to gain your trust before requesting personal information.
Best practices if you received a suspicious message:

  1. If a message looks suspicious, don’t tap, share or forward it.
  2. 2. Validate the message according to the guidelines as was indicated above.
    • Pause and think
    • Stop the conversation
  3. 3. If you are unsure whether it is a suspicious message, contact the person in any other way than the cell phone. When confirmation is received that it is not your contact who sent the message, then

    • Block and report
    • Update your privacy and security settings
